
Syracuse Shuts Out Seton Hall, 2-0

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Syracuse women’s soccer team recorded its second consecutive shutout, beating Seton Hall, 2-0, on Sunday, Sept. 28 at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Orangewomen improve to 7-2-0 overall, while the Pirates are now 2-6-1.
“This was the best 90 minutes of soccer we’ve played so far,” Head Coach April Kater said. “Every adjustment they tried to make we were able to counter. From front to back we played terrific.”
Junior Helen Fox and senior Anne-Marie Lapalme scored SU’s goals. Fox’s tally was her third of the year and second in SU’s last two games. Lapalme’s goal was her second of the season and the sixth of her career. Lapalme also posted six shots in the match. Senior Nina Scalzo picked up the 13th assist of her career, which is one shy of Erin Parsons (1997-99, 2001) for fifth on SU’s all-time assist list.
The game was scoreless through the first 18 minutes, until Scalzo sent a crossing pass to Fox, who beat Pirate goalkeeper Buffy Wojciehowski high to the left side to give SU a 1-0 advantage at 18:56. Lapalme sealed the the victory when she chipped in the rebound off a shot by junior Kelly Bailie at the 60:25 mark.
Sophomore Emily Kowalczyk played all 90 minutes for Syracuse and made one save to earn the third shutout of her career.
The Orangewomen out shot the Pirates 21-4, including a 10-1 edge in the first half.
Wojciehowski made eight saves for Seton Hall.
It was the second straight shutout for SU against the Pirates. The Orangewomen defeated Seton Hall, 4-0, in 2001. Syracuse leads the all-time series with the Pirates 4-3.
The Orangewomen will host Rutgers at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m.
